GSM: The Global Standard

Go to market faster by leveraging the global GSM standard, offered by Jasper Wireless.

85% of the World’s Mobile Connections are GSM

GSM is the global cellular standard, and most broadly deployed digital wireless standard in the world, with over 3.2 billion connections worldwide. GPRS, EDGE and W-CDMA run on top of a GSM network, overcoming the limitations of speed, message length, and dialup time typically experienced with these networks.

Most M2M data applications use the ubiquitous GPRS, a packet transport technology that supports flexibJasper Wireless is an Operator Member of the GSM Associationle M2M data transmission rates, typically 50 kbps to 160 kbps. EDGE and W-CDMA (3G) are higher-bandwidth technologies that offer even faster transaction speeds.

All three provide users with a continuous network connection and are available on demand for two-way communications.

GPRS is a Ubiquitous Data Standard

GPRS is available in nearly every country in the world, with consistent performance across networks. It enables new data applications that could not be deployed previously, making it the ideal transport technology for M2M communications.

Packet-based technology. Rather than sending information in a steady stream through a single channel, GPRS breaks the information down into "packets" and sends them over multiple channels. Each packet travels by the fastest available route to the recipient, where it is reassembled into the original message. Sending packets by several different channels increases the speed of transmission and cuts down on signal errors.

Always on. Like a radio, GPRS is always available. As long as the equipment is switched on, there is an open channel for sending and receiving data. This allows remote equipment to send and receive data right away, without requiring a lengthy login session.

Two-way communication. With GPRS two-way communication, devices can be controlled remotely—a major enhancement over one way connectivity that simply allows data to be collected. This two-way communication capacity can be further enhanced by securing the devices within a virtual private network and monitoring them directly.

Higher-Speed Options – EDGE and W-CDMA

Jasper Wireless is proud to support higher-speed options in many of its covered countries. EDGE is an enhancement to GPRS, enabling data rates typically ranging from 150 kbps to 400 kbps. W-CDMA, a type of 3G network, provides even faster connections. Not all countries and networks currently support 3G today, although this is rapidly changing.
