Telstra launches wireless machine-to-machine service offering to connect business and consumer devices

28 September 2010 – Australian organisations can more easily design, deploy and manage wireless machine-to-machine – or M2M – services using a new web-based self-service platform.

Known as the Telstra Wireless M2M Control Centre, the platform is a significant step forward in providing business, enterprise and government organisations with a powerful solution to self-manage a range of M2M-based products that will use the Next G network for wireless internet connectivity.

Telstra has entered into a multi-year agreement with M2M technology provider Jasper Wireless to power the Telstra Wireless M2M Control Centre.

John Paitaridis, Executive Director of Telstra Enterprise & Government said the M2M service will give customers more flexibility and control to quickly activate, deploy and manage their M2M services.

“The launch of the Telstra Wireless M2M Control Centre allows our approved business, enterprise and government customers to increase their productivity by connecting and administering M2M services themselves at their organisation via a powerful yet easy to use web-based tool.

“The Telstra M2M platform will not only support devices for business needs such as electronic metering, asset tracking and remote operations but is also expected to accelerate market entry for a new generation of connected consumer devices such as electronic readers, picture frames and portable navigation devices.

“The platform provides Telstra with the ability to offer customers more flexibility in M2M pricing and data plan options to suit the needs of their business and type of applications they are using,” he said.

The Wireless M2M Control Centre is part of Telstra’s commitment to grow opportunities and develop new distribution models to serve the growing wireless M2M market in Australia.

Wireless machine-to-machine or M2M technology refers to enabling electronic devices, other than mobile phones, to communicate with other devices or systems using the mobile phone network. Wireless M2M modules are typically embedded into these electronic products to use the mobile network to transmit business critical information wirelessly over the internet.

As part of this launch, Telstra will also make available to approved customers and developers a new Wireless M2M Developer Kit which will be supplied with a set of SIM cards enabled with a trial data and SMS allowance to help customers test and develop their wireless M2M solution.

The Telstra Wireless M2M Control Centre solution will be available to approved customers from 29 September through Telstra Business and Telstra Enterprise & Government account managers.
