Cutting through the M2M hypeThe marketing departments of technology companies love buzzwords, visions and the wholesale ‘shifting of paradigms’. However, all too often, these new terms and phrases are just recycling concepts that have already been in everyday use for years – albeit with much lower profiles. Anyone scanning the media over the last few years can’t fail to have noticed the latest wave of hype around what – at least at the start – was known as machine-to-machine communications – or M2M. |

Smart Cities: Smarter BuildingsWe've all heard of the 'house of the future'. It crops-up in conversation each time a new domestic gadget appears on the market, claiming to take us nearer to a time when homes are completely automated. The brainchild of both architects and electricians, the typical futuristic multi-million pound smart home has fibre-optic throughout, intelligent lighting that illuminates a path through your house when you come home, and electric heating of 'zones' selected via a smartphone app. It probably has a state-of-the-art home cinema, too, and a team of robot vacuum cleaners that keep the place clean. |

Machine-to-machine in emerging marketsM2M has come to mean any apps that are driven by automated systems, at least at one end of it, if not both. More advanced African countries have already installed M2M services that are particularly useful in Africa; for example, security monitoring, fire alerts, anti-theft devices, tracking vehicles and goods. However, the main issue remains the level of ARPU. For many industries, embedded connectivity is viewed purely as a cost. M2M operators should look to automate away much of the costs, to improve margins. They need a platform with a flexible business model that can address multiple device types for any demographics in different vertical markets. |

ABI Research Ranks Jasper Wireless #1 in M2M Connected Device PlatformJasper Wireless has been ranked as the leading M2M Connected Device Platform (CDP) vendor in a new Competitive Assessment released by ABI Research. Its ability to present a global footprint, dominant market share, and vertical-specific expertise were fundamental to it securing top spot. With many Tier 1 MNOs having built their own CDP or selected a third-party alternative, the race is heating up to snap up those MNOs without a CDP and this is a race that Jasper appears to be winning at a canter. |

We’re seeing a rush of deals and some of these collaborations verge on consolidation by another name. |

Internet turns 21, but needs to grow upIt celebrates its 21st birthday this year, but is the World Wide Web growing up? From e-mailing, search engines and file sharing to the dotcom bubble, the emergence of Google and, most recently, the creation of social media, the digital landscape has had many landmarks. But it's the smartphone that has the power to quickly transform lives for the better, but in future it's not going to just be handsets, tablets and laptops that use the web. Next up is the "internet of things", also known as machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, which will shape a world where your car can talk to your auto repairer, a pacemaker can feed medical data to a doctor, and where "smart metering" will put your home's heating system in direct communication with the utility company. |

How smarter cars and digital cities are about to change the way we driveTravel and settlement has always been fuelled by the latest tech known to man. Steam power, coal, electricity and the humble combustion engine have propelled humans around cities and across the seas. But forget fossil fuels; now it's data that's helping shape the next generation of smart cars and cities where 'intelligent mobility' is the next big thing for drivers. …"In Singapore, one of the most connected cities in the world, operators are investing in traffic management systems," says Macario Namie, vice president of marketing at Jasper Wireless, which provides a machine-to-machine network for Singtel in Southeast Asia. "Connectivity is impressive, not just on the mobile side, but also the fixed line. Report: Jasper Wireless clear leader in CDPNew data from ABI Research singles out Jasper Wireless as a “clear leader” among vendors of Connected Device Platforms (CDPs), ahead of Ericsson, NSN and NEC. CDPs are used to facilitate the deployment and management of connected devices for M2N applications over cellular networks. They are typically used by mobile network operators (MNOs) and provided to M2M application deployers as a cloud service. Although some operators have built their own CDPs, most are now turning to solutions developed by third parties. That market is expected to be worth around $2.14 billion in 2017, according to ABI Research (Oyster Bay, N.Y., USA). |

Embedded M2M Solutions - Jasper Wireless and M2M: What it Means to ConsumersMachine-to-Machine (M2M) is usually something you hear thrown around IT departments. The practice was found within large organizations that could afford and wanted to maintain their own data networks. The technology is used in industries such as fleet management, vehicle telematics and smart grid and asset monitoring. M2M is a largely misunderstood when it comes to the consumer market, mostly because consumers are not as concerned with the technology driving much of their mobile devices. Mobility, connectivity and personalization are three of the most important current trends within consumer electronics. |

The Internet of Things: how it'll revolutionise your devicesForget the cliché idea of fridge that sends you a text when you run out of milk. Try one that senses what's inside, chooses your next fortnight's meal plans, order what it needs via an online supermarket, and syncs a delivery slot with your Gmail calendar. You might have a smart TV and you've almost certainly got a smartphone, perhaps even one that syncs content to an iPad, but such 'smart' devices are just the beginning of what's loosely termed the 'Internet of Things', or IoT for short. Also (perhaps more correctly) called 'machine to machine', the IoT isn't owned or controlled by any one group or company, comprises no single idea, and it certainly isn't on any of our gadget wishlists. But it will change all of our lives… The M2M market is growing rapidly and unlike any other, is one technology that can surpass human interaction," says Macario Namie, VP of marketing at Jasper Wireless, which is working with mobile operators such as O2 in the UK and AT&T in the US on IoT communications. "Its limitless reach means it's set to be prevalent in connecting future societies." |

M2M gains traction as business model maturesMobile subscription growth of 38 per cent in a mature market is something operators haven't seen for many years. Remarkably, this is what the world's top ten operators experienced last year with machine-to-machine (M2M) subscription adoption, according to Berg Insight, leading to around 3.4 per cent of their aggregate subscriber base of 2 billion being connected to machines and not people. …An indication of how M2M differs from the handset business comes from Jasper Wireless, a leading provider of M2M platforms. Macario Namie, vice president of marketing at Jasper, noted that M2M average revenues per user are typically significantly less (below 10 per cent) of what operators achieve from their handset customers. As such, Namie maintains that adopting the same systems and processes that operators have been using for the past few decades for the handset-based business cannot be used to make M2M profitable. |
